IS IT EESI TO SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT?

By now we all know we need to make a change to save our environment. Its been drilled into us to not leave the TV on standby and to turn the lights off when we're not using the room, but we cant avoid using electricity full stop. Especially for businesses its hard to cut down on the use of electricity, so Stroud's Business of the Year - EESI Group Services has come up with a new service to help combat the problem.

The new division – Energy Efficient Systems Installed – is there to help businesses that want to make a change. They specialise in energy efficient products that not only help save the environment, but reduce energy bills too. EESI offers a variety of systems that can reduce your companies' carbon footprint. These range from energy efficient lighting and climate control all the way up to smart building controls – which can increase energy efficiency by up to 50%. [Source - http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2008/ts_072108.html] With the wide range of services at EESI they can offer complete turnkey projects to vastly improve any businesses energy consumption.

Quality Manager Derek Hyett said, "We are aware of the amount of damage being done to our environment and we wanted to address the problem. By bringing in a new range of energy efficient products we hope to help reduce our customers carbon footprint (and save them some money off their energy bills)".

It can be easier and cheaper than you think to make a change. The Carbon Trust is now offering interest free loans, from £3,000 up to £400,000, for companies investing in energy efficient products. The Governments climate change bill means companies will have to make changes soon, so its advisable to invest now while energy efficiency is being encouraged rather than demanded.

Not every manager has the time to assess their businesses energy use but EESI will do this for you. With free site surveys expert staff can identify where your business could reduce energy consumption and improve its carbon footprint.

The Carbon Trust states "A 20% energy cut has the same bottom line benefit as a 5% increase in sales in many businesses" [source - http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/publications/publicationdetail?productid=CTV034]

FACTS ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

  • 60% of UK employees now say it's important to work for a company that has an active policy to reduce its carbon emissions.
  • A 20% cut in energy costs represents the same benefit as a 5% increase in sales in many businesses
  • Good to conduct energy surveys at a time when you expect little or no energy to be used.
  • Heating costs can rise by 30% or more if your boiler is not properly maintained.
  • Heating costs rise by about 8% for every 1°C of overheating
  • £5,000 to £100,000 interest free loans available from carbon trust to invest in energy efficient products.
  • Energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs have longer life and use up to 75% less energy than standard light bulbs.
  • Office lighting generally costs £3/m² annually, but in an energy efficient office only costs £1/m²
  • Lighting an office overnight wastes enough energy to heat water for 1,000 cups of tea
  • Changing your light fittings can give an 80% energy saving and give a longer lamp life
  • Compressed air systems can often leak (30-50% is not uncommon), simple maintenance can improve energy efficiency.
  • In many cases, using a VSD (Variable Speed Drive) to reduce the speed of a pump or fan by just 20% can halve its running cost.
  • Higher efficiency motor can cost no more than normal ones and reduce running costs by 5%
  • Motors can consume their purchase price in energy costs in just a few weeks
  • Banks of lights are often controlled by one switch, consider installing more switches to improve control of individual fittings
  • By turning monitors off when computers are not being used (including lunchtimes) you can reduce energy consumption by up to 90%
  • A photocopier left on overnight uses enough energy to make 5,000 A4 copies.
  • A computer and flatscreen monitor left on 24 hours a day will cost around £50 a year. Switching them off out of hours and enabling standby features could reduce this to less than £15 a year and prolong the lifespan of equipment.
  • On average 20% of a commercial offices energy bill is accounted for by office equipment – about half of this is from PCs and monitors.
  • Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) enable businesses to buy energy efficient equipment using a 100% rate of tax allowance in the year of purchase.
  • Use your bills and meter readings to investigate your energy use and see how your improving.
